چکیده

The Morpho butterflies exhibit surprisingly brilliant blue wings originating from the submicron structure created on scales of the wing. It shows extraordinarily uniform color with respect to the observation direction which cannot be explained using a simple multilayer interference model. We have performed microscopic, optical and theoretical investigations on the wings of four Morpho species and have found separate lamellar structure with irregular heights is extremely important. Using a simple model, we have shown that the combined action of interference and diffraction is essential for the structural color. It is also shown that the presence of pigment beneath the iridescent scales greatly enhances the blue coloring by reducing the unwanted background light. Further, variations of color tones and gloss in the Morpho wings are discussed in terms of the combination of cover and ground scales with various structures and functions.

Range and stability of structural colors generated by Morpho-inspired color reflectors.

The range and stability of structural colors generated by Morpho-inspired color reflectors are investigated. We find that despite the internal randomness of such structures that gives rise to their Morpho-like angle-independent iridescence, their colors under ambient lighting condition can be predicted by simple transfer-matrix calculations of corresponding planar multilayer structures. By calc...

A Physically Based Anisotropic Iridescence Model for Rendering Morpho Butterflies Photo-realistically

Rendering the brilliant iridescent colors of the Morpho butterflies has been a challenge in computer graphics. The cause of vivid blue color of the wings of these species is not as the result of the pigments of the wing. They are caused by the physical microscopic structures on the scales of the wing. These micro-structures has been studied extensively in various fields by different expertise [...

Reproducing the hierarchy of disorder for Morpho-inspired, broad-angle color reflection

The scales of Morpho butterflies are covered with intricate, hierarchical ridge structures that produce a bright, blue reflection that remains stable across wide viewing angles. This effect has been researched extensively, and much understanding has been achieved using modeling that has focused on the positional disorder among the identical, multilayered ridges as the critical factor for produc...

Disorder and broad-angle iridescence from Morpho-inspired structures.

The ordered, lamellae-structured ridges on the wing scales of Morpho butterflies give rise to their striking blue iridescence by multilayer interference and grating diffraction. At the same time, the random offsets among the ridges broaden the directional multilayer reflection peaks and the grating diffraction peaks that the color appears the same at various viewing angles, contrary to the very...

A Phenomenological Representation of Iridescent Colors in Butterfly Wings

The representation of the color of butterflies has always been a challenge to artists, whatever the medium involved. These colors are highly complex to reproduce, even with the use of computer generated images. This article introduces a new algorithm developed to simulate and generate the iridescent colors that are found on the wings of particular butterflies. The model presented here is based ...
